Bourses d’étude : La Bourse « Master Mind » du gouvernement flamand 2019

The Flemish Ministry of Education awards scholarships to outstanding students for Master programmes in Flanders and Brussels. The Master Mind programme aims to promote Flanders and Brussels as a top study destination.

The call for the next round of applications (academic year 2019-2020) has been launched. Please carefully check the information on this page.

The deadline for applications to the University of Antwerp is 15 February 2019. Applications have to be done online through Mobility Online.

You can apply for a Master Mind scholarship to study for one of the following Master programmes: 

  1. Applied Economic Sciences: Business Economics
  2. Applied Economic Sciences: Economic Policy
  3. Biology: Biodiversity, Conservation and Restoration
  4. Biology: Global Change Biology
  5. Biomedical Sciences: Infectious and Tropical Diseases | Research
  6. Biomedical Sciences: Neurosciences | Research
  7. Chemistry
  8. Computer Science: Computernetworks and Distributed Systems
  9. Computer Science: Data Science
  10. Computer Science: Software Engineering
  11. Laws (LL.M)
  12. Linguistics and Literature: English
  13. Physics
  14. Political Science
  15. Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy: Internal Conditions
  16. Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy: Neurological Conditions


The applicant applies to take up a Master degree programme at the University of Antwerp.

The applicant should have a high standard of academic performance and/or potential. This means:

  • The student has a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 out of 4.0. You can find the GPA calculator here.
  • The student has a good knowledge of the English language, proven by one of the following situations:
    • an overall band score of minimum 7.0 on the IELTS test;
    • a minimum total score of 94 on a TOEFL test;
    • a C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference;
    • a similar result in another official language test;
    • or an excemption provided by the Master programme Selection Committee.

Additionally, the University of Antwerp will consider the following aspects when evaluating candidates:

  1. Academic performance
  2. Motivation
  3. Attitude and maturity
  4. Relevant work experience
  • The student has to be accepted by the University of Antwerp to be able to receive the scholarship. Even if the university’s final decision is taken after awarding the scholarship to the student.
  • All nationalities can apply. The previous degree obtained should be from a higher education institution located outside Flanders.
  • Students who are already enrolled in a Flemish higher education institution cannot apply. The only exception is made for international students who, at the moment of their application in the spring of 2019, are already enrolled in a preparatory programme in order to start a Master programme in September 2019.
  • Students who enroll for the following programmes for the academic year 2019-2020 are not eligible for a Master Mind scholarship:
  1. preparatory programmes
  2. distance learning programmes
  • Student mobility during the master programme is allowed. However, at least half of the credits of the master programme must be obtained at the University of Antwerp.


  • The duration of mobility is one academic year for a Master programme of 60 ECTS and two academic years for a master programme of 120 ECTS.
  • The incoming student is awarded a maximum scholarship of €8.000 per academic year according to the modalities mentioned in the appendix Payment of the scholarship. Read more about this under ‘Scholarship’.
  • The University of Antwerp can ask the applicant for a tuition fee that equals the lowest rate of the yearly tuition fee for a student from who receives a study grant from the Flemish Government. The rate for the academic year 2019-2020 is €110,8. This rate may increase slightly from year to year. In case of two-year master programme (120 ECTS), the exact applicable rate for 2020-2021 will be communicated to the Master Mind beneficiaries before the 1st September 2020.
  • There are a number of scholarships reserved for students from certain countries: Japan (3), Mexico (3), Palestine (2) and USA (5). These countries are priority countries for the Flemish government. If these numbers of scholarships are not taken up, they will be awarded according to the ranking of the candidates as decided by the Flemish Selection committee.
  • Students should not combine this scholarship with another scholarship from the Flemish Governement or an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
  • Upon completion of the mobility all students are expected to submit an essay for which a format is provided and to fill in a short questionnaire about their mobility.
  • A maximum of 20 applications can be submitted per Flemish higher education institution.


The incoming student is awarded a maximum scholarship of € 8.000 per academic year according to the modalities mentioned in the appendix Payment of the scholarship.

How to apply?

The University of Antwerp screens all applicants and submits a shortlist of 20 candidates for the scholarship. The Flemish Government makes the final selection on the basis of this shortlist.

To apply for the Master Mind scholarship, students need to complete the following steps:

  1. Complete your application and upload all documents for the relevant Master programme at the University of Antwerp. Click here to read more about the Admission and enrolment procedure. Please do not forget to upload your English test scores!
  2. During your application clearly indicate that you would also like to apply for the Master Mind Scholarship. In your motivation letter, clearly specify why you are applying for the Master Mind scholarship and why you should be selected. Please address every selection criterium. In addition, specify your GPA score. Applications without a motivation letter will not be considered.
  3. Submit this application before 15 February 2019.

Potential candidates will be screened by the Selection Committee and will be contacted in March 2019 to further complete the Master Mind application file.

If you are shortlisted, you will need to ensure that all hard copy documentation is received by our Registrar’s Office before 31 May 2019.

The results of the final selection by the Flemish Government will be known in June 2019.

Start of mobility is September 2019.
