Bangor University – UK
Bangor University, originally known as the University College of North Wales (UCNW), was established on 18 October 1884. The foundation was marked by an inaugural address delivered by the Earl of Powis, the college’s first President, in Penrhyn Hall. This significant event included a procession to the college, featuring 3,000 quarrymen. These quarrymen, hailing from Penrhyn Quarry and other local quarries, had collectively contributed more than £1,200 to support the university’s establishment. This financial backing was crucial in realizing the vision of improved higher education provision in Wales.
