Historical Background

James Madison University, originally known as the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg, was founded in 1908 and began admitting students in 1909. The institution has undergone several name changes reflecting its growth and evolution:

• 1924: Became the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg.
• 1938: Renamed Madison College in honor of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, whose Montpelier estate is nearby in Orange, Virginia.
• 1976: Adopted its current name, James Madison University.

Early Leadership

• Julian Ashby Burruss: The first president, served from the university's opening in 1909 until 1919. The inaugural class consisted of 209 students and 15 faculty members. The first 20 graduates received their diplomas in 1911.
• Samuel Page Duke: Succeeded Burruss in 1919 and served until 1949. Under Duke's leadership, nine major buildings were constructed, marking a period of significant expansion.
• G. Tyler Miller: Became the third president in 1949, following Duke's retirement. Miller's tenure saw the campus expand by 240 acres and the construction of 19 buildings. Coeducation and Curriculum Expansion

• 1946: Men were first enrolled as regular day students.
• 1966: The institution officially became coeducational, admitting both men and women equally.
• 1954: Authorized to grant master’s degrees, allowing for advanced academic pursuits.
