Expansion and Development of Makerere University

Early Years and Course Offerings

Makerere University, initially established as a technical school, began offering various courses in medical care, agriculture, veterinary sciences, and teacher training shortly after its inception. This diversification in academic offerings allowed the institution to address a broader range of educational needs in the region. By 1935, the college had grown significantly, becoming a Center for Higher Education in East Africa, marking the beginning of its transformation into a premier institution of higher learning.

Transition to Higher Education

In 1937, Makerere College further evolved by starting to offer post-school certificate courses. This development marked a pivotal shift from its initial role as a technical and vocational training institution to a more comprehensive higher education establishment. Over the years, Makerere continued to expand its academic programs, laying the foundation for its future status as a full-fledged university.

Strategic Plan (2020-2030)

Approval and Goals

At its 148th meeting held on 15th June 2020, the Makerere University Council approved the Strategic Plan for 2020-2030. This plan outlines a transformative vision for the university, focusing on several key objectives aimed at enhancing its role and impact both locally and internationally.

Transforming into a Research-Intensive Institution

One of the primary goals of the Strategic Plan is to transform Makerere University into a more research-intensive institution. By prioritizing research, the university aims to generate new knowledge, drive innovation, and contribute to solving pressing societal challenges. This shift towards a research-centric model is intended to elevate Makerere's academic standing and attract top-tier researchers and scholars from around the world.

Enhancing Community Relevance

The Strategic Plan also emphasizes the importance of enhancing the university's relevance to the community. Another critical objective of the Strategic Plan is to consolidate Makerere University's position as Uganda's engine of development.
