Historical Background

Pittsburgh State University (PSU) was established in 1903 as the Auxiliary Manual Training Normal School, a branch of the State Normal School of Emporia (now Emporia State University). In 1913, it evolved into a full-fledged four-year institution named Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburgh, commonly referred to as Pittsburgh State. Over the next four decades, the institution broadened its mission beyond teacher training, leading to a name change in 1959 to Kansas State College of Pittsburgh. Finally, on April 21, 1977, it adopted its current name, Pittsburgh State University.

Facilities and Expansion

In December 2014, PSU inaugurated the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, providing its first true performance facility since the closure of Carney Hall in 1978. The Bicknell Center includes:

• Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall
• 250-seat theater
• 2,000-square-foot art gallery
• Grand lobby
• Reception hall
• Multi-use rehearsal space for large musical groups

PSU also extends its reach with a satellite campus in the Kansas City Metro Area, the Kansas City Metro Center Campus, offering various bachelor's and master's degrees. Additionally, two degrees are provided in Salina, Kansas, on the Salina Area Technical College campus.

Academic Structure

Pittsburgh State University is organized into the following colleges and schools:

The Kelce College of Business is accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). PSU is also home to several research institutes, including the Business & Technology Institute and the Kansas Polymer Research Center, housed in the newly completed Tyler Research Center.

Pittsburgh State University has grown significantly since its inception in 1903, evolving from a teacher training institution to a comprehensive university offering diverse academic programs.
