University of Limerick: An Overview

Location and campus

The University of Limerick (UL) is uniquely situated along both sides of the River Shannon in Plassey, County Limerick. The extensive campus spans 137.5 hectares (340 acres), with 46 hectares (110 acres) on the north bank and 91.5 hectares (226 acres) on the south bank. This strategic location is just 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from Limerick city center, offering a serene yet accessible environment for students and staff alike.

Student demographics

UL boasts a vibrant student community with over 11,000 full-time undergraduate students. Among these, more than 2,400 are international students, enriching the campus with diverse perspectives and cultures. Additionally, UL caters to 1,500 part-time students, demonstrating its commitment to flexible learning opportunities. The university also supports a robust postgraduate community, with over 800 research postgraduates and 1,300 postgraduate students receiving instruction.

Co-operative education programme

One of UL's standout features is its pioneering co-operative education ("co-op") programme. As Ireland's first such initiative, it integrates up to eight months of work placement into the degree program, providing students with invaluable real-world experience and enhancing their employability upon graduation.

Leadership and governance

Since its establishment, the University of Limerick has seen a series of esteemed leaders at its helm. Following the founding president, Edward M. Walsh, the institution has been guided by Roger GH Downer, John O'Connor, Don Barry, and Des Fitzgerald. As of August 2020, the current president is Professor Kerstin Mey, who continues to lead UL with a focus on innovation and academic excellence.
