The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and its Collaborative Initiatives

Founded in 1995, the AGF transformed into the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers, marking a significant milestone in its history. Since 1977, the Center has also been a distinguished member of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT)

One of the notable achievements of the German Cancer Research Center is its collaboration leading to the establishment of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg. Funded by German Cancer Aid with 29 million Euros, the project was inaugurated on November 2, 2010, with Germany’s Minister of Health, Dr. Philipp Roesler, in attendance. Situated on the campus of Heidelberg University Hospitals, the modern facility aims to bridge cutting-edge research with clinical application.

Partnerships and Mission

The NCT represents a partnership between Heidelberg University Hospitals, Thorax Clinic Heidelberg, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), and the German Cancer Aid, initiated by the late Dr. Mildred Scheel. According to Professor Dr. Otmar Wiestler, Scientific Director of DKFZ, the new building of NCT provides optimal conditions for translating research findings into clinical practice, leveraging the expertise of DKFZ and Heidelberg University Hospitals.

The German Cancer Consortium (DKTK)

Established in October 2012, the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) is a key initiative involving the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), participating German states, and DKFZ. As one of six German Health Research Centers (DZGs), DKTK employs over 950 researchers, with approximately 350 employed through DKFZ. A significant focus of DKTK is fostering the next generation of cancer researchers, with 20% of its workforce consisting of postgraduate students. Financed through an institutional funding model, DKTK’s annual budget since 2014 has been EUR 27.8 million, with a total budget of EUR 80.5 million for its first research period (2012–2015).
