Early History and Campus Development

Lancaster University was initially based in St Leonard's Gate in the city center. In 1968, the university relocated to a purpose-built 300-acre (120 ha) campus at Bailrigg, situated 4 km (2.5 mi) south of the city. The campus buildings are arranged around a central walkway known as the Spine, which connects to a central plaza named Alexandra Square in honor of the university's first chancellor, Princess Alexandra.

Collegiate System

Lancaster University is one of only six collegiate universities in the UK. The eight undergraduate colleges, which are weakly autonomous, are named after places in the historic county of Lancashire. Each college has its own campus residence blocks, common rooms, administration staff, and bar, fostering a unique community spirit and identity among students.

Most colleges have about eight or nine hundred members, and all on-campus accommodation is affiliated with a college. The allocation of accommodation blocks or individual flats to a specific college varies each year based on demand.
