Origins and Foundation

The roots of Neumann University trace back to 1855 when Bishop (later Saint) John Neumann approved the request of Anna Maria Boll Bachmann to establish a community of Franciscan Sisters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Initially focused on religious service, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia expanded their mission over the next century, recognizing the need for a college to further their educational endeavors in southeastern Pennsylvania and beyond.

Establishment of Our Lady of Angels College

Neumann University was founded as Our Lady of Angels College in 1965 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Initially welcoming 115 female students, the college was established with a commitment to providing quality education rooted in Franciscan values of service and community.

Evolution into Neumann College

In 1980, Our Lady of Angels College was renamed Neumann College in honor of Saint John Neumann, a former Bishop of Philadelphia known for his dedication to education and social justice. This change reflected the institution's growth and expanded mission to serve both male and female undergraduate students.

Academic Advancements

Neumann College expanded its academic offerings significantly over the years. In 1980, it admitted its first male undergraduate students, marking a pivotal moment in its history. The institution gained approval to offer its first doctoral program, the Doctorate in Physical Therapy, in 2004, followed by an Ed.D. in educational leadership in 2005. These programs underscored Neumann's commitment to academic excellence and meeting the educational needs of its community.

Attainment of University Status

In 2009, Neumann College achieved "university status" from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, officially becoming Neumann University. This milestone recognized its comprehensive academic programs, expanded research initiatives, and continued dedication to serving its diverse student body.
