The University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study aims to:
- Provide opportunities for excellent researchers to explore new ideas and approaches, to deepen or redirect their research, to broaden their horizons and to apply their knowledge to new areas.
- Support fundamental and interdisciplinary research.
- Share knowledge with society at large.
The Governing Board of USIAS consists of ten eminent scholars from Strasbourg, appointed by the President of the University, holding USIAS research Chairs in their respective field:
- Pierre Chambon – Chair in Biology and Molecular Genetics
- Thomas Ebbesen – Chair in Physical Chemistry of Light-matter Interactions
- Jules Hoffmann – Chair in Integrative Biology
- Georges Kleiber – Chair in Language Science
- David Le Breton – Chair in Contemporary Anthropology
- Jean-Marie Lehn – Chair in Chemistry of Complex Systems
- Jean-Louis Mandel – Chair in Human Genetics
- Jacques Marescaux – Chair in Image-guided Minimal Invasive Surgery
- Sylviane Muller – Chair in Therapeutic Immunology
- Roland Recht – Chair in Historiography of Art
In addition, professor Catherine Florentz, Vice-president for Research and Doctoral Education at the University of Strasbourg is ex officio member of the USIAS Board.
The Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Strasbourg (USIAS) was created in 2012 for a place of intellectual innovation. The USIAS is committed to supporting original research, possibly in all scientific fields, and to fostering a high level of reflection and synthesis. Each year, the USIAS awards between ten and twenty fellowships, for a period of three months, to allow the continuation of original and innovative research projects. USIAS provides Fellows with the necessary support for the success of their project, in terms of operating costs for research, seminars, travel and publications.
